I would be creating elegant interfaces that would delight users and solve their problems. At least I thought I would.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Those years in school taught me a lot. Research, project planning, teamwork, prototyping. Buckets of theory about devices and interfaces, users and stakeholders. I was clobbered over the head with important and familiar advice such as \u201c<em>Know the device standards!<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>Design for context!<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Visiting conferences only confirmed that my teachers were on the right track. These speakers, obviously knowledgeable in their field, touted the same sort of advice. <\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><span class=\"long-quote\">\u201c<em>Your users don\u2019t just sit behind a computer anymore, oh no, they use phones now! They might be sitting in a bus even!<\/em>\u201d<\/span><br \/>\nI nodded knowingly. \u2018Yes, they might..!\u2019<br \/>\nObviously I knew this, after all, I\u2019d studied it for years! I\u2019m going to talk to you about Contrast as it pertains to interface design and how incredibly important it is.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">The Beauty of Soft\u00a0Grey<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Have you ever divided content by putting it in white overlays on a subtly grey coloured background? I know that I have. I remember the first time I presented an intricate interface, with several types of content ever so subtly divided, on a beamer. I can feel some of you cringing. That\u2019s what I did too. But it was school and that beamer was known for it\u2019s issues. So I, like others, learned to \u2018look around\u2019 the beamer issue and showed designs on my laptop instead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">We tiptoed around the problem until a real world work problem popped up. A client mailed me about a design I\u2019d created for him. He was missing some design elements he\u2019d remembered seeing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><span class=\"long-quote\">\u201cI don\u2019t see the grey anywhere!\u201d He said.<br \/>\n\u201cAre you sure? I see it in the files I sent you..\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIt isn\u2019t there!\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cCould you send me a screenshot?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">The screenshot looked just fine, exactly as I\u2019d designed it. Soft grey dividers, white boxes on grey backgrounds, light grey text. Perfect aesthetically pleasing screens that don\u2019t keep the problem of contrast in mind.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">When Does This\u00a0Apply?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">With every digital product you design.<br \/>\nWait, let me give that statement some nuance:<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><span class=\"long-quote\">This applies to every single digital product that can be used or viewed by users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Better?<br \/>\nLet\u2019s break it down.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-l marginBottom-m c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5\">Monitors<\/h3>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">The client example above shows that even in today\u2019s world, where the average resolution is pretty good, contrast is still different per monitor.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s position-relative marginTopBottom-l breakPointM-marginTopBottom-xl\"><div class=\"blog-quote-before position-absolute bg-marvel\"><\/div><div class=\"tweet-quote blog-quote-after position-absolute bg-marvel cursor-pointer transitionDuration-l transitionProperty-all transitionTimingFunction-cv-easeOutCircular scaleUp--hover zi-weak\"><svg class=\"fill-white opacity-0 pointerEvents-none position-absolute pinCenter transitionProperty-all transitionTimingFunction-easeInOut\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"24\" height=\"20\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 20\"><path d=\"M24,2.37a9.64,9.64,0,0,1-2.83.79A5,5,0,0,0,23.34.37a9.72,9.72,0,0,1-3.13,1.23A4.86,4.86,0,0,0,16.62,0a5,5,0,0,0-4.8,6.2A13.87,13.87,0,0,1,1.67.92,5.13,5.13,0,0,0,3.19,7.67,4.81,4.81,0,0,1,1,7a5,5,0,0,0,3.95,5,4.82,4.82,0,0,1-2.22.09,4.94,4.94,0,0,0,4.6,3.51A9.72,9.72,0,0,1,0,17.73,13.69,13.69,0,0,0,7.55,20c9.14,0,14.31-7.92,14-15A10.17,10.17,0,0,0,24,2.37Z\"\/><\/svg><\/div><p class=\"blog-quote position-relative textAlign-center c-marvel\"><span class=\"blog-quote-text transitionDuration-l transitionProperty-all transitionTimingFunction-easeInOut\">\"You can\u2019t know for sure if your user has their monitor on the highest or lowest possible contrast setting.\"<\/p><\/span><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">You can\u2019t know for sure if your user has their monitor on the highest or lowest possible contrast setting. Maybe the brightness hurts their eyes, maybe they just never touched the settings and the original settings are kind of crap. You can\u2019t know everything, but you can keep more in mind than what you normally see.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-l marginBottom-m c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5\">Older phones<\/h3>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">As designers we are likely to use high-end phones that\u2019ll show us the work of our competitors in all their glory. But it may not be what your users see.\"<\/p><\/span><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Just like our users don\u2019t necessarily work with the best hardware when it comes to their big screens, they aren\u2019t likely to hold their small screens to our excessive industry standards. Users may be restricted by their finances at the time, the plan they could get, they might have a personal preference for a brand or maybe their choice of phone is simply not as much of a priority. iPhone designers may the worst offenders here <em>(full disclosure: I am one)<\/em>. Since iPhones are bright and contrast-rich, we are lulled into the sense that all phones are similarly so. Nothing could be farther from the truth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Unless you know for a fact that your entire user base will only consist of the phone that you are using to test at that very moment \u00e1nd it need never grow beyond that user base, you need to keep in mind that the phone your app or website will be viewed on may be crappier than your own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">The contrast on an older or cheaper phone can play a huge factor on how your product is experienced. When you are designing apps this is a much more common issue.<br \/>\n<em>(Even here in Amsterdam, where sunshine is a rare sight to behold)<\/em> \u26c5????<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">At <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"http:\/\/fonk.amsterdam\/\">Fonk<\/a> we design a lot of apps, used by a variety of quite active users. When your app is being used by a truck driver as he\u2019s picking up products at his various stops, or kids that are running around outside and using your app throughout the day, you need to make sure whatever you\u2019ve designed is viewable in their context.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">An Example<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Let me give you an example. It is soft, elegant and gives me a clear context: it has to do with location. The tilting of the map and location pin make me feel like I\u2019m \u2018in\u2019 the map. I loved it! I even saved it as inspiration. You don\u2019t need to create extravagant prototypes to do so. There is nothing wrong with soft grey, or blue or green or whichever colour you choose. So long as you always check if you aren\u2019t employing design traits that make your screens look beautiful, but render it less usable in different contexts or on different devices. If so, drop them or find alternative solutions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><span class=\"long-quote\">The thing about contrast is that it\u2019s remarkably easy to loose sight off, despite how much it means for the usability of our products. We need to design for understanding first, delight\u00a0second.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">We are creating solutions to help users of all sorts accomplish their goals. Be mindful of those users.
