I think of them as personas plus spacetime. The journey shows you where the persona is when certain experiences occur.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Or, as Megan Grocki writes in <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"http:\/\/uxmastery.com\/how-to-create-a-customer-journey-map\/\"><em>How to Create a Customer Journey Map<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><span class=\"long-quote\">\"A Customer Journey map is a visual or graphic interpretation of the overall <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">story<\/strong> <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">from an individual\u2019s perspective<\/strong> of their relationship with an organization, service, product or brand, over time and across channels.\"<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Meet Rick. <\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Rick is like you and me; sometimes his internet connection breaks and he needs someone to come over and fix it. My two-person team was tasked to explore ways to increase Rick\u2019s advocacy of a service we\u2019re designing around this kind of field repair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Both the product owner and product manager were traveling and the design team on the MVP, who had designed the surrounding experience, was busy. We were alone and uncertain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">We gathered notes, assumptions and aligned with the product manager over Slack and Trello. A proto-persona existed and the service\u2019s experience design was outlined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">My engineer teammate, <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@russellwolf\">Russell Wolf<\/a>, wanted to level up his design skills, so I suggested we sketch a quick customer journey map. He would get to learn a new design technique and we would cobble some insights out of this process. We also reframed the design prompt:<strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"> How might we raise Rick\u2019s delight so that he advocates the service?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Some of our goals for sketching were:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s list list--unordered marginBottom-l lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\n<li>Empathize with our persona, Rick, so we might find ways to increase his overall delight with the service<\/li>\n<li>Align our assumptions about Rick\u2019s experience with the rest of the team\u2019s documented assumptions<\/li>\n<li>Share something with the rest of the team that will help them further empathize with Rick<\/li>\n<li>Provide future research with some assumptions to validate around making Rick an advocate for the service<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">About 30 minutes later, we had 80% of it done. When the two designers who created the MVP were ready, we walked them through the journey. I wanted to keep the digital fidelity low enough to emphasize the \u201cproto\u201d in proto-journey, lest someone get carried away and think this is fully-baked.
