This is the first in a series of posts that show how <\/em><a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"http:\/\/philosophie.is\"><em>we at Philosophie<\/em><\/a><em> hone tools and processes against the whetstone of day-to-day practice. Sometimes we find something interesting about the technique or find some hack that makes it better. This is how we want to share it back with the community that we have benefitted from.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">We use <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcodesign.com\/1672917\/the-8-steps-to-creating-a-great-storyboard\">Crazy Eights<\/a> often during ideation at <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"http:\/\/philosophie.is\">Philosophie<\/a> including during our <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"http:\/\/philosophie.is\/offering\/design-sprint\/\">Design Sprints<\/a> (as does Google Ventures). Often it is done on a piece of paper that has been folded to make eight areas. You use a timer to force people to sketch as quickly as possible, usually within eight minutes total. In particular, since we are all experts that read similar content we get boxed into heuristics, rather than opening up the possibilities to new monumental ideas. This wasn\u2019t the shoebox that I had put together in grade school. They were digitally designed and would interact with the observer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Rather than choose a particular theme for all teams, we decided to randomize it with a generator built in Google Sheets. It was inspired by <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"http:\/\/orteil.dashnet.org\/gamegen\">game jam theme generators<\/a> I had seen before. The theme that was generated included a famous person, an activity, a place, an art style, and a particular Grove input component. In a recent ideation session we added the randomizing technique to add even more craziness to our eights.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">The Crazy Eights with Oblique Strategies method<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">We started the <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcodesign.com\/1672917\/the-8-steps-to-creating-a-great-storyboard#4_Crazy_Eights_5_minutes\">Crazy Eights exercise<\/a> by stating the problem that we needed ideas for. We are pleasantly surprised it worked as well as it did. Or are there specific types of concept sets that work best?<\/li>\n<li>Alternate to cards: <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/rpgcharacters.wordpress.com\/house-rules\/random-tables\/\">RPGs use random tables<\/a> to randomize play.<\/li>\n<li>Should these random concepts be more or less associated with the problem space (or analogous problem spaces) we are ideating for?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">This paves the way to tools that add an appropriate amount of randomness.
