{"id":3815,"date":"2016-10-18T11:42:27","date_gmt":"2016-10-18T10:42:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/?p=3815"},"modified":"2017-07-25T15:45:25","modified_gmt":"2017-07-25T14:45:25","slug":"leave-more-margin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/blog\/leave-more-margin\/","title":{"rendered":"The big mistake nearly every designer makes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">And quite honestly, it\u2019s not a mistake that is unique to the design profession.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">I\u2019m guilty of it myself, and I see it all the time with very talented designers\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">If there is one change that you could make right now that will make the world of difference in your business, it\u2019s this:<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Leave more margin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">I stumbled upon the concept of <em>margin<\/em> while reading <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"http:\/\/michaelhyatt.com\/more-margin.html\" target=\"_blank\">a post by Michael Hyatt<\/a>, which led me to <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"http:\/\/mariepoulin.com\/blog\/design-your-ideal-week-increase-productivity\/\" target=\"_blank\">design <em>my<\/em> ideal week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Richard Swenson, M.D. (who wrote the book: <em><a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1576836827\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1576836827&linkCode=as2&tag=mariepoulinco-20&linkId=Q6RLLVFNBOJNDV2O\" target=\"_blank\">Margin: Restoring Emotional, Physical, Financial, and Time Reserves to Overloaded Lives<\/a><\/em>) describes margin like this:<\/p>\n<section class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\n<div class=\"long-quote\">\n<div class=\"marginBottom-m\"><em>\u201cMargin is the space between our load and our limits. It is the amount allowed beyond that which is needed. It is something held in reserve for contingencies or unanticipated situations. Margin is the gap between rest and exhaustion, the space between breathing freely and suffocating.<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>Margin is the opposite of overload. If we are overloaded we have no margin. Most people are not quite sure when they pass from margin to overload. Threshold points are not easily measurable and are also different for different people in different circumstances. We don\u2019t want to be under-achievers (heaven forbid!), so we fill our schedules uncritically. Options are as attractive as they are numerous, and we overbook.\u201d<\/em><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Last year I wrote about why <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"http:\/\/mariepoulin.com\/blog\/are-you-booking-your-clients-too-far-in-advance\/\" target=\"_blank\">booking too far in advance can be dangerous for your business<\/a>, and this concept of <em>margin<\/em> so eloquently captures what I had recognized had been my problem: I was so booked up with clients that I wasn\u2019t leaving any margin for error, growth, planning, or reflection. I wasn\u2019t really <em>growing<\/em> my business in a sustainable way; I was just booking one client after the next. Create a program. Update your contracts and proposals (which has been on your to-do list for how long..?) Spend more time with your family. Go above and beyond for a client. Learn something new. Actually follow through on the things that have been nagging at you for a long time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">When you design your ideal week, you start to see that <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">the time you think you have is often not in alignment with how much time you actually have.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">After designing my ideal week, I had a much clearer idea of how to create a framework for my week that would empower me to feel more focused by theming days of the week, and even parts of the day. SO simple, I know. It can even send you weekly reports so you know exactly how much time you wasted on Facebook, or spent in your email inbox! You can assign different websites or programs\/applications on a scale of very distracting to very productive, so you can see at a glance things like: which days of the week you\u2019re most productive, which times of the day you\u2019re most productive, and the sites on which you\u2019re spending the most distracting time. <\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Turns out I\u2019m consistently \u201cin the zone\u201d around 3pm in the afternoon; so instead of trying to tackle highly creative work first thing in the morning (when my brain is barely functioning), I handle it in the afternoon, when I know I\u2019m at my peak!<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">I manually track my time spent on general client work, meetings, and personal projects using Timely app, while leaving Rescue Time running in the background so I have a general sense of how much time I spent between apps and within different websites. With these 2 tools, I have a pretty good sense of where my time is going week to week.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-l marginBottom-m c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5\">Theme your days<\/h3>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">I themed my days in a way that made sense for me:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Sunday:<\/strong> Rest and plan for the week<br \/>\n<strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Monday:<\/strong> Mentorship<br \/>\n<strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Tuesday:<\/strong> Client Work + Content Creation<br \/>\n<strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Wednesday:<\/strong> Mentorship<br \/>\n<strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Thursday:<\/strong> Masterminds<br \/>\n<strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Friday:<\/strong> <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"http:\/\/weareokidoki.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Oki Doki<\/a> work day (new business development, design, content creation, community building, brainstorming, etc)<br \/>\n<strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Saturday:<\/strong> Personal day: personal development, friends, errands, catch-up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Mondays and Wednesdays are now set aside for <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"http:\/\/digitalstrategyschool.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Digital Strategy School<\/a> work\/mentorship, Tuesdays and Thursdays are now my major work and content creation days, while Friday is entirely set aside for <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"http:\/\/weareokidoki.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Oki Doki<\/a> work and planning. It\u2019s easy to put that stuff on the back-burner when things get busy, but physical activity is so essential to my sanity, that only by mapping it out into my schedule do I actually <em>really<\/em> feel committed to it (reminders and all).<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Scheduling-.png\" alt=\"scheduling\" width=\"1065\" height=\"689\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3835\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Scheduling-.png 1065w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Scheduling--600x388.png 600w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Scheduling--768x497.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1065px) 100vw, 1065px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">My schedule will always be a work in progress, but simply by limiting the times I\u2019m available in my scheduler system (I use <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/calendly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Calendly<\/a> for this), I\u2019ve managed to create more space for content creation, brainstorming, planning, designing, and just <em>life<\/em> in general.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Maybe you\u2019ve got children, or other obligations, hobbies etc. Add them to your calendar and theme your week in a way that makes sense for <em>your<\/em> values, goals, intentions, etc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Seriously, try the exercise for yourself\u200a\u2014\u200ayou might be surprised.
