News. An industry that was indisputably turned on its head by the arrival of the internet, smartphones and social media. The way that people consume news changed drastically and now every newspaper has its own website, app and social media accounts. We spoke to Digital Creative Director, Jan-Jan Tayson<\/a>, about the inner workings of the design team at America\u2019s 13th oldest and seventh most widely circulated newspaper, the New York Post<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Well known for its brilliantly bold headlines and its front pages, the New York Post is a weekly newspaper that was established way back in 1801. The tabloid paper is part of the Newscorp family and an umbrella company to several affiliates, namely Page Six<\/a>, entertainment and celebrity news and Decider<\/a>, a guide to the streaming platforms like Netflix. Each of these affiliates, known collectively as the Post Digital Network, has its own website and app which is overseen by Jan-Jan in the digital department.<\/p>\n

So tell us a little about yourself, Jan-Jan...<\/h3>\n

Of course, so I am the Digital Creative Director at the New York Post; I\u2019ve been here for just over two years and I love it. In the New York Post digital department, I oversee the design and UX of the affiliate sites, liaise with other departments and manage our designers. I studied design back in college, Packaging Design to be exact, which I loved but then a good friend introduced me to digital and I\u2019ve never looked back.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s it like working at the New York Post?<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s pretty fantastic. We\u2019re a part of the Newscorp family and so we get to experience the benefits of working for a large corporation - such as a strong HR department and also a vast network of resources. However, my department is still quite new and small, which means it\u2019s run a little like a Startup, mainly because there is not a lot of red tape to go through. At the same time, we\u2019ve increased our unique users over 300% <\/a>in the past three years, and nearly 200% since I began to lead the design team in June 2014.<\/p>\n
