Diversity of thought and opinion in the design process really does lead to better results.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s list list--unordered marginBottom-l lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\n<li>A diverse team offers more chance for empathy with your users as <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www.mindtheproduct.com\/diversity-isnt-just-right-smart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">outlined by Martin Eriksson at Mind the Product<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>A study by <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/organization\/our-insights\/why-diversity-matters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">McKinsey<\/a> found companies in the top quartile for racial and ethnic diversity were 35 percent more likely to have financial returns above their respective national industry medians.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s only by <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/open.nytimes.com\/why-having-a-diverse-team-will-make-your-products-better-c73e7518f677\">including diverse perspectives and experiences in your product process<\/a> that you can successfully build products for a diverse user group says Modupe Akinnawonu at the NY Times.<\/li>\n<li>Diverse teams produce better outcomes by the <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2016\/09\/diverse-teams-feel-less-comfortable-and-thats-why-they-perform-better\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harvard Business Review<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Marvel\u2019s company mission guides what and how we build our product, and it also reflects how we act internally too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20836\" src=\"https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Blog-pink-Copy-5.png\" alt=\"Balance and belonging\" width=\"1920\" height=\"623\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Blog-pink-Copy-5.png 1920w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Blog-pink-Copy-5-600x195.png 600w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Blog-pink-Copy-5-1500x487.png 1500w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Blog-pink-Copy-5-768x249.png 768w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Blog-pink-Copy-5-1536x498.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Starting with Diversity &amp; Inclusion<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">We\u2019ve had a Diversity and <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/blog\/the-impact-of-inclusion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Inclusion<\/a> steering group at Marvel since 2016 when we raised our first round and were deciding what kind of company we wanted to be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">During the 2020 summer of <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/blog\/creative-resources-in-support-of-black-lives-matter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Black Lives Matter<\/a> protests, we introduced several changes at Marvel in response, including internal training, education budgets and internal resources. We also tripled the size of our Diversity and Inclusion steering group in order to dedicate more support to more work we wanted to do in this area.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">How we switched to Balance and Belonging<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Our team researched how other companies handle diversity and one article from <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www.atlassian.com\/belonging?tab=race\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Atlassian<\/a> resonated with us as they discussed compelling ideas around building equitable, balanced teams. They suggest the term Balance and Belonging is more representative and inclusive than Diversity and Inclusion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">We were struck with what they said about Balance, and how the term includes those who might be left out of the \u201cdiversity\u201d conversation \u2013 caregivers, those with invisible disabilities, or those with intersectional identities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Balance also does a good job of conveying the continual, ongoing work necessary to balance multiple voices and perspectives. Rather than \u201cdiversity\u201d which we felt sounded more like a hashtag or box ticking exercise where you consider that you\u2019ve achieved it. Balance implies constant checks and tweaks to become and then remain balanced as our work is not short term but a continual process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Belonging applies equally to all team members rather than Inclusion, which has notes of the majority represented group \u201cbudging up\u201d to make room or to go out of their way to make space for others. We believe Belonging is something that everyone comes to work to feel. And to feel they can be fully themselves at work and be accepted by the community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Belonging, in particular, has been so relevant to the Marvel team during the coronavirus restrictions. We believe people come to work to belong. To feel connected to others; part of a community, and part of a wider purpose of the company. The personal wellbeing side of belonging at work is a little more challenging to maintain remotely!<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">The words together \u2013 Balance and Belonging sound relevant to the whole team. Perhaps because of how Diversity &amp; inclusion have been used\/misused at times, it can sometimes have connotations of being a fringe initiative. Or of perhaps only being relevant to underrepresented groups. Balance and Belonging to us sounds more neutral and more relevant to the whole team. Something everyone could and should care about and contribute to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Unanimously the team agreed that Balance and Belonging suited us better, and the name was changed! Diversity of thought that led to a better outcome was demonstrated :)<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20835\" src=\"https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Blog-pink-Copy-6-1.png\" alt=\"Balance and belonging\" width=\"1920\" height=\"623\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Blog-pink-Copy-6-1.png 1920w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Blog-pink-Copy-6-1-600x195.png 600w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Blog-pink-Copy-6-1-1500x487.png 1500w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Blog-pink-Copy-6-1-768x249.png 768w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Blog-pink-Copy-6-1-1536x498.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">More than a hashtag<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">After we\u2019d agreed as a team to rename ourselves to Balance and Belonging, I had an experience with a recruiter that totally validated the rebrand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">While briefing a recruiter for a job role, I outlined - as we do with all recruiters - that we only work with those who can commit to helping us source a balanced set of candidates. In every sense. Educational background, nationality, life experience, gender, ethnicity; to name just a few. We want to see a range of candidates, because if the pipeline isn\u2019t balanced, our hires, and therefore our team, have no chance of being so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">In reply, this recruiter said: \u201cOK, interesting approach,\u201d and did a small, barely audible chuckle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">The email they sent following that call included an overview of what we\u2019d discussed, with bullet points summarising the profile of the person we were looking for. That hashtag tells me it was so clearly a box-ticking exercise to them; the last bullet point; the least important aspect of the role we had discussed on the call.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Now, this may be reading too much into this one sentence. But I just thought this fully illustrated why moving to a focus on Balance over Diversity was right for Marvel. Diversity has become a bit of a hashtag. Which trivialises the efforts of teams genuinely trying to build a balanced team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Needless to say, we did not work with this recruiter!<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Our next Balance and Belonging team initiatives<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">What\u2019s next for the Balance and Belonging team at Marvel? By including progress in all-hands presentations, up there with company stats on revenue and performance. Which is exactly where they should be.
