Companies like <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Airbnb<\/strong>, <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Square<\/strong>, <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Pinterest<\/strong>, <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Wunderlist<\/strong>, <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Kickstarter<\/strong>, <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Twitter<\/strong>, and <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Flickr<\/strong> were founded by designers <em>(<\/em><a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"http:\/\/designinstruct.com\/business\/startups-founded-by-designers\/\"><em>source<\/em><\/a><em>)<\/em>. Their successes are a tribute to the power of design as a key pillar of business.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">What does Design Thinking entail?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">User research is a key aspect of Design Thinking. Identifying who your target users are, and speaking with them 1:1 (and frequently) is critical to the process. Building a rapport allows you to personally understand the problems they face, and what they would need in order to solve their problems. Along the way, designers continually touch-base with users in the form of interviews, user testing, usability studies, (as well as a few other methods) in order to test and validate their solutions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">There is no such thing as a group of designers huddling in a cave for months and gloriously emerging with the holy-grail of designs, gilded in shimmering light, having perfectly solved their users\u2019 needs in the first go. No-way. Designers have a mantra we live by: <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Fail fast. Succeed faster<\/strong>. Written loud and clear, they live by this concept: Disrupt, Repeal, Repeat. When Obama reformed health care, although the bill passed the house, it was a completely partisan vote (<a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/resources.ehealthinsurance.com\/affordable-care-act\/history-timeline-affordable-care-act-aca\">no Republicans voted for it<\/a>). There was no agreement or compromise. Seemingly overnight there was a <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"http:\/\/obamacarefacts.com\/obamacare-pros-and-cons\/\">positive change<\/a> and an <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"http:\/\/health.usnews.com\/health-news\/health-insurance\/articles\/2016-01-06\/aca-changes-more-small-business-owners-to-offer-coverage-face-increased-compliance\">equally negative wake<\/a> hitting people and companies that were not anticipated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Repeal:<\/strong> Leaders and government officials love to pull the \u2018<a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/mulligan\">mulligan<\/a>\u2019 card and simply repeal whatever laws were passed, regardless of any directional progress they may have initiated. Didn\u2019t like Obamacare (aka the Affordable Care Act)? No worries, President Trump is <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/politics\/articles\/2017-01-21\/trump-signs-order-to-ease-burden-of-obamacare-spokesman-says\">already repealing it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">And Repeat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Why we need design thinking in government<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">This is the frustrating whirlwind ride we all go on. Disagreements between parties keep us from making any stable form of progress. They happen so often and are so uncompromising, that Government Shutdowns might as well be considered a <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Government_shutdown_in_the_United_States\">trend<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Our politicians live in a bubble where they shut themselves in a cave for a period of time only to emerge gloriously with ludicrously lengthy bills, preaching their glory as if they reached their solution by grace and wisdom of God. Sometimes, they simply pass what they <em>think<\/em> they should pass; sometimes they pass what has an <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Earmark_(politics)\">earmark<\/a> with their name on it. And if or when things fail, they repeal the entirety of it, and try again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">The designers of our laws, our freedoms, our rights, and the processes they abide by are broken. It only takes a glance at the introduction to our great constitution to see we\u2019re not on the right track.<br \/>\n<span class=\"long-quote\">\"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">more perfect Union<\/strong>, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">to ourselves and our Posterity<\/strong>, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.\" \u2014 <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Preamble_to_the_United_States_Constitution\">Preamble to the United States Constitution<\/a><\/span><br \/>\nIn order for our government to better serve us, the People, <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">their process should be user-centered<\/strong>. By the people, for the people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">We need to thoroughly research the problems themselves. Who are the <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">people<\/strong> most affected by the problem? What is the <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">problem<\/strong>, <em>really<\/em>? How does it <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">impact the people<\/strong> it affects? And <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">how can we try to solve it<\/strong>? And never taking a biased view from the perspective of special interest groups or corporate entities that seek financial or regulatory gain. Once we identify a problem and hypothesis, we test. Test and <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">iterate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">The easiest way for us to start is to <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">iterate upon that which already exists<\/strong>. The solution to the perceived \u201cfailure\u201d of the Affordable Care Act is not to throw it away and disrupt the People and the systems again. <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">The best solutions come with research and iteration.<\/strong> And the iterations must be watched with a sharp, keen eye, as to identify problems the instant they become visible, so as to buffer any major impact they may create down the road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">I work within the realm of user-centered design and its benefits are very familiar to me. Design Thinking is a scientific, human-centered, and empathetic process that yields the best designed solutions. It gets us to a platform of understanding the people and their problems; with firm understanding and empathy, along with continuous innovation, we can create the best solutions.<\/p>\n<blockquote
