If we want this to be the way we do things at Trade Me, how can we keep the momentum up and get more people involved? What\u2019s missing?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20110\" style=\"width: 1410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20110\" class=\"wp-image-20110 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/0_a1V8C8dosFJMJsWA.png\" alt=\"Shifting mindset\" width=\"1400\" height=\"779\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/0_a1V8C8dosFJMJsWA.png 1400w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/0_a1V8C8dosFJMJsWA-600x334.png 600w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/0_a1V8C8dosFJMJsWA-768x427.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20110\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shifting a company\u2019s mindset might feel like moving a large boulder.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Trade Me\u2019s Maz Hermon created a presentation on \u2018<a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1rt3GQs9gFRSdxl249KhKdLsXWY41UzNyXroFu3AS9qY\/edit#slide=id.p\">Enabling people to care about accessibility<\/a>\u2019 which contains helpful tips on how to do this.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Understanding our company<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">One of our initiatives was to create a survey to gauge the level of interest, knowledge and experience from our employees, so we knew what would be the best way to keep up the momentum and empower more people to get involved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">The questions we asked in the survey were:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s list list--unordered marginBottom-l lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\n<li>What does accessibility mean to you?<\/li>\n<li>What is your experience with accessibility?<\/li>\n<li>To what extent are you interested in being involved in accessibility initiatives?<\/li>\n<li>How would you like to be involved?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">The survey was answered by 97 people. We had responses from developers, designers, testers, delivery managers and product owners, and the results were as diverse as the number of participants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">The results showed us that people have different ideas around what accessibility means to them, and although eager to learn more, most people seem to face a barrier of not knowing where to find resources or how to start.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Forming a grassroots movement<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><span class=\"long-quote\">Should we create an accessibility guild? How can we make sure we are sharing knowledge and growing employees\u2019 awareness around accessibility?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Following the survey, we set up an open meeting for anyone to join where we presented the results from this survey and came up with our next steps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">The meeting was split into two 2-hour blocks, structured around four main questions:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s list list--unordered marginBottom-l lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\n<li>What have we achieved so far?<\/li>\n<li>What were the challenges?<\/li>\n<li>What do we want to achieve?<\/li>\n<li>What is the best way to achieve it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"style=\"text-align: center;\"><img class=\"size-full\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" \/><a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/1G-l6R1yYqzEl20zxmmA0Ng.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6580\" src=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/1G-l6R1yYqzEl20zxmmA0Ng.png\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>The Post-it notes were grouped by themes and put up on the walls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">The participants wrote Post-it notes which were then grouped through an affinity map exercise into six main actionable themes:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s list list--unordered marginBottom-l lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\n<li>Documentation<\/li>\n<li>Process<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge sharing<\/li>\n<li>Upskilling<\/li>\n<li>UX testing\/research<\/li>\n<li>Getting to know our users<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">We then created a shared document with a total of 21 action points, and participants put their names down as \u2018responsible for\u2019 and\/or \u2018keen to be involved\u2019. The action points covered things like contacting users, organising workshops, writing to the executive team, and organising an event for Global Accessibility Awareness Day.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Global Accessibility Awareness Day Hackfest<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">16 May is\u00a0<a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/globalaccessibilityawarenessday.org\/\">Global Accessibility Awareness Day<\/a> (GAAD) \u2014 a day when people all over the globe get together to create awareness about accessibility and ways of making products, services and experiences more inclusive. We saw this as a brilliant opportunity to affect change that would continue beyond the event and on to the long journey ahead of us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Following the initial meeting, a group of 10 of us got together and organised a day of activities for Trade Me teams. This consisted of a couple of technical and theoretical presentations in the morning, and the afternoon for teams to find and fix bugs, create new features, research, or just learn together. We had 90 participants, across three different cities.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20111\" style=\"width: 1410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20111\" class=\"wp-image-20111 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/0_T_4_RquCvoRSzlwI.jpeg\" alt=\"Shifting the mindset on accessibility at Trade Me GAAD 2019\" width=\"1400\" height=\"1050\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/0_T_4_RquCvoRSzlwI.jpeg 1400w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/0_T_4_RquCvoRSzlwI-600x450.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/0_T_4_RquCvoRSzlwI-768x576.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20111\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">2019 GAAD at Trade Me\u2019s office. Having meetings in open spaces is a good way of attracting more people to join.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><img class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6580\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" \/> <a><img class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6580\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">At the end of the day, we got together and went through presentations of what we learnt and what new features we could build into our website. These are some examples of what we achieved:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s list list--unordered marginBottom-l lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\n<li>UX research on improving our content for members with dyslexia.<\/li>\n<li>A new attribute for Trade Me Property listings, that enables advertisers to let members know if houses are considered accessible by the owner.<\/li>\n<li>A concept design for a new way of prompting sellers to write better descriptions for their photos to be used as alt text.<\/li>\n<li>A tool to check what combination of text and background colours from our colour palette passes colour contrast.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">The day was successful in spreading awareness internally. Seeing our people get involved and feel happy about their achievements and improvements for our members reassured us that we\u2019re heading in the right direction. By the end of 2019, we had applied some of the outcomes to our product roadmaps. We\u2019re continuing with the initiatives we have underway and also organising activities for 2020 GAAD.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">There\u2019s still more work to be done, but so far these initiatives have delivered some progress for us at Trade Me.
