While the <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2017\/01\/31\/design-industry-73-per-cent-white-lacks-diversity-finds-aiga-census-survey\/\">US design industry is 73% white and 55%, male<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">According to the Office for National Statistics, the estimated total population of England and Wales is <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/populationandmigration\/populationestimates\">66.5million<\/a>, and out of that <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www.indexmundi.com\/united_kingdom\/demographics_profile.html\">87.2%<\/a> of the population is white and <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www.ethnicity-facts-figures.service.gov.uk\/uk-population-by-ethnicity\/demographics\/male-and-female-populations\/latest\">49%<\/a> are male. The UK design industry makes up less than <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/dcms-sectors-economic-estimates-2017-employment-and-trade\">4%<\/a> of the total population of the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www.indexmundi.com\/united_states\/demographics_profile.html\">72.4%<\/a> of the 330 million people living in the US are white and just under <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/737923\/us-population-by-gender\/\">48%<\/a> of the population is male.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Whilst the data makes for sober reading for the design industry, the good news is that employers are starting to recognise the strong business cases for improving the level of <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/blog\/resources-for-diverse-hiring-in-design\/\">diversity<\/a> and inclusion within their teams. By recruiting people from a range of backgrounds at all levels of seniority, businesses can develop their internal and external relationships, as well as enhancing the knowledge and experience that they bring to their clients. Mckinsey has found that companies created from a broad range of backgrounds outperform firms with a less diverse workforce by <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/organization\/our-insights\/why-diversity-matters\">35%<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><span class=\"long-quote\">\u201cOver <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/insights\/focus\/human-capital-trends\/2017\/diversity-and-inclusion-at-the-workplace.html\">69%<\/a> of executives consider diversity and inclusion the most important issues. Recognising that the organisational and individual benefits of a positive, \u2018inclusive\u2019 experience can lead to strong performance throughout the organization.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">In our current digital world, which operates as a network of teams, thriving on empowerment, open dialogue and inclusive working styles. One of the more popular fields right now is the creative industry which has continued to power growth across both the UK and US. Based on recent studies by <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www.nesta.org.uk\/news\/creative-industries-are-driving-economic-growth-across-the-uk-on-track-to-create-one-million-new-creative-industries-jobs-between-2013-and-2030\/\">Nesta<\/a>, the UK\u2019s creative industries were growing at twice the rate of the economy and by <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/independent-review-of-the-creative-industries\">2025 could also be worth \u00a3128.4 billion to the UK\u2019s economy<\/a>.
