What is a Pivotal Research Iteration?<\/h2>\n

As a designer at Pivotal Labs<\/a>, I treat every week of research as a new opportunity to iterate, to learn something new from real people and apply it to our products. I\u2019m not a designer sprinting towards a finish line \u2014 that needs a lot of recovery time.<\/p>\n

Rather, my team is reliably crushing assumptions and increasing product fidelity as part of a research iteration, ahem, a Pivotal Research Iteration<\/em>. We start the week with research goals and end with a backlog of features that are prioritized, designed, built, and shipped.<\/p>\n

So, I\u2019ve created the Pivotal Research Iteration<\/a> Trello template to share the week(ish)-long process*<\/em> I follow with researchers inside and outside of Labs to make the most of our time \u2014 whether we\u2019re planning, conducting, or sharing exploratory or evaluative research.<\/p>\n

Every checklist, best practice, and step in the process has been hard won, so I hope whatever stage you\u2019re at, you can start using it right now. Of course, this template works best when you copy the board, read the instructions<\/a> and work through the first checklist<\/a>, but feel free to start wherever you need.<\/p>\n

Here are three reasons I can\u2019t live without it:<\/p>\n

  1. It\u2019s fool-proof lean research.<\/strong> Just follow the checklists and you\u2019re using the latest lean research methods. Read a few best practice cards to avoid rookie mistakes. And never forget to print an NDA, grab a water, or send an Amazon gift card again.<\/li>\n
  2. It\u2019s remote-friendly and collaborative.<\/strong> No matter where my stakeholders, clients, or fellow researchers live, everyone can learn, see progress, and contribute.<\/li>\n
  3. It\u2019s self-documenting and glanceable.<\/strong> By keeping each iteration week visually in one place, presenting to stakeholders and looking back on past weeks\u2019 research goals, learnings, and impacts becomes effortless. This Trello is so light-weight, it practically fills itself out.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    What\u2019s the\u00a0process?<\/h2>\n

    After doing user research with many different types of Labs clients and users \u2014 and learning from the best lean researchers I know \u2014 I\u2019ve captured the research process I find most useful in 8 simple lists. These lists document your weekly research iteration\u2019s\u2026<\/p>\n

    1. Goals \u2014 <\/strong>realistic research goals for the week<\/li>\n
    2. Links \u2014 <\/strong>quick links to the screener, participant list, interview guide, NDA, and prototype<\/li>\n
    3. Participants (Day 1) \u2014 <\/strong>scheduled participants on day 1 of interviews<\/li>\n
    4. Participants (Day 2)\u2014 <\/strong>scheduled participants on day 2 of interviews<\/li>\n
    5. Quotes \u2014 <\/strong>important quotes tagged with the participant who said it<\/li>\n
    6. Insights \u2014 <\/strong>patterns of behavior shared across three or more participants<\/li>\n
    7. Action Items \u2014 <\/strong>new features and next steps that address user insights<\/li>\n
    8. Done \u2014 <\/strong>completed checklists and action items<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Anyone on your team can fill out these lists by working through the five checklists. The checklists detail what steps to take\u2026<\/p>\n

      Along the way, you\u2019ll be reading best practices, tips, and examples for every step \u2014 including how to set realistic research goals<\/a>, write interview guides<\/a>, and create clear action items<\/a> from prioritized insights<\/a>.<\/p>\n

      After the lists have been filled out and checklists completed, you\u2019ll end up with both well documented research sharable via Trello, and a list of action items that will change your product for the better.<\/p>\n
