That is why I jumped at the opportunity to give a <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/11CFnqvYb2HYIRUlOxStOEwOX3f-XxZMj\/view?usp=sharing\">talk<\/a> about conducting proper synthesis at the <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"http:\/\/planet.globalservicejam.org\/\">Service Design Jam<\/a> conference in San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">In this post I\u2019ll be dropping some knowledge I have acquired from my <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/amber-reed-33a85a69\/\">past<\/a> <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/iran-narges-2618bb\/\">instructors<\/a> at <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"http:\/\/www.ixd.cca.edu\/\">California College of the Arts<\/a> and my professional career working as a Product Designer at companies large and small.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">What is synthesis?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">For those who are new to the design industry, synthesis takes place right after you have a clear problem you have been tasked with solving and you have conducted interviews with key stakeholders and customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">It is important to note that the problem you are solving for might change as a result of synthesis and that\u2019s ok! Another thing to keep in mind is that synthesis and brainstorming solutions should always be separate parts of your process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">There are four steps I take to synthesize my research:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s list list--ordered marginBottom-l lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\n<li>Document interviews<\/li>\n<li>Affinity cluster<\/li>\n<li>Generate insight statements<\/li>\n<li>Form how might we questions<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Why synthesis matters<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Unfortunately research and synthesis are <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/blog.prototypr.io\/so-your-boss-doesn-t-believe-in-user-research-40d8128db08e?source=messageShare-86beb15283ed-1524581678\">undervalued<\/a> <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/design-ibm\/the-vital-role-of-user-research-8c2f51a9cead\">in<\/a> <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/uxplanet.org\/how-to-communicate-the-value-of-user-research-df60c0f25a31\">organizations<\/a>. Often times, there is a tight timeline or small budget for a project, and this puts pressure on designers to rush through this part of their process in order to \u201cdeliver\u201d something.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><span class=\"long-quote\">\"It doesn\u2019t matter how much research you do if the people who have acquired the most knowledge write a report and move on.\" \u2014 Erika\u00a0Hall<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">We must be constantly asserting the value of research and synthesis for one key reason: if we make something no one will use, then the entire project\u2019s budget will have gone to waste. A similar risk presents itself when research and synthesis are conducted but then don\u2019t inform our concepts and designs. <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@mulegirl\">Erica Hall<\/a> states this very eloquently in her book <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/abookapart.com\/products\/just-enough-research\">Just Enough Research<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Documenting interviews<\/h2>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-14965 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-large'><dl class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<dt class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Documenting-interviews.png'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"851\" src=\"https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Documenting-interviews-1500x851.png\" class=\"attachment-large size-large\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Documenting-interviews-1500x851.png 1500w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Documenting-interviews-600x340.png 600w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Documenting-interviews-768x435.png 768w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Documenting-interviews.png 1940w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/dt><\/dl><br style=\"clear: both\" \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">A good synthesis session always begins with proper documentation. When transcribing interviews, make sure to keep the information concise. A good rule of thumb is to only use 1\u20132 sentences per post it note. I also make it a habit of writing down the interviewees initials in the bottom right hand corner for reference.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">When transcribing my notes, I use different colors of post it notes to differentiate between three types of information:<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Observations are indirect quotes or recurring patterns you noticed throughout an interview<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">For example, if I was researching retirement homes, I might have noticed that many seniors mentioned they had to give up many of their personal belongings before moving in.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Direct quotes capture the exact words of the interviewee<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">It\u2019s good practice to take photo and audio documentation of each interview in case you need it for future reference.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Interpretations are underlying motivations or assumptions that were not explicitly mentioned<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">These are the most difficult to distinguish. Continuing my example, I might have noticed in my research that when seniors brought up their family members, their body language suggested that they would like them to visit more frequently.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Affinity clustering<\/h2>\n<div id='gallery-2' class='gallery galleryid-14965 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><dl class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<dt class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Affinity-clustering.png'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1940\" height=\"1100\" src=\"https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Affinity-clustering.png\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Affinity-clustering.png 1940w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Affinity-clustering-600x340.png 600w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Affinity-clustering-768x435.png 768w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Affinity-clustering-1500x851.png 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1940px) 100vw, 1940px\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/dt><\/dl><br style=\"clear: both\" \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><span class=\"long-quote\">\"Affinity clustering is a process used to externalize and meaningfully cluster observations and insights from research, keeping design teams grounded in data as they design.\" - <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Universal-Methods-Design-Innovative-Effective\/dp\/1592537561\/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&amp;qid=&amp;sr=\">Universal Methods of Design<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Once the information is up on a wall, affinity clustering helps naturally group information together based on emerging themes we discover in the data. After grouping all of the information, label each category. These groups or \u201cbuckets\u201d lay the foundation for the rest of the synthesis process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">There will inevitably be outliers that won\u2019t fit into any one category. When everything is grouped, you will begin seeing unmet needs and desires of the people you interviewed. <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">These are what we call research findings, otherwise known as insight statements.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">If you aren\u2019t having lightbulbs go off in your head at this stage of synthesis, it is probably a good indicator that you need to interview more people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Continuing my previous example, my insight statement might read something like this: \u201cSeniors living in retirement homes want the mobility to visit their family members but don\u2019t have any methods for doing so without a car.\u201d Note that I am merely framing an existing problem.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Forming how might we questions<\/h2>\n<div id='gallery-4' class='gallery galleryid-14965 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><dl class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<dt class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Forming-how-might-we-questions.png'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1940\" height=\"1100\" src=\"https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Forming-how-might-we-questions.png\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Forming-how-might-we-questions.png 1940w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Forming-how-might-we-questions-600x340.png 600w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Forming-how-might-we-questions-768x435.png 768w, https:\/\/marvelapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Forming-how-might-we-questions-1500x851.png 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1940px) 100vw, 1940px\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/dt><\/dl><br style=\"clear: both\" \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Before coming up thousands of amazing ideas, reframing insight statements as questions enables us to think opportunistically about some of the underlying problems we uncovered.<strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"> By placing how might we at the beginning of each question, we are able to provide a framework for brainstorming solutions centered around real human centered needs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">My insight statement would be reframed as follows: \u201cHow might we enable senior citizens living in retirement homes to safely visit their families?\u201d To learn more about how to construct great how might we questions, I would highly recommend reading IDEO\u2019s <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"http:\/\/www.designkit.org\/methods\/3\">Design Kit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Synthesis is one of my favorite parts of the design process because it enables us to build empathy with the people we are designing for.
