The humble error message.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Why error messages\u00a0matter<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">We\u2019ve probably all seen an \u201cincorrect password\u201d error once in a while (or, um, daily). While it can be frustrating when things don\u2019t work as expected, we usually just brush it off, no big deal. But what\u2019s the cumulative effect of these small moments?<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Each error message is a tiny roadblock that gets in the way of what we were trying to do. Depending on the context, an unhelpful message can be the difference between continuing or giving up. Is there a way to just make it work? (Really, the best error message is no error message.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">But if you do need it, think carefully about the message. <\/strong>When things go wrong and the app \u201cfails,\u201d say something useful. The message should help the user solve the problem and move on.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Tips for writing helpful error\u00a0messages<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">If you can\u2019t fix the underlying issue and need to show an error message, here are some things to keep in mind.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">1. Say what happened and\u00a0why<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">A lot of error messages are vague. Really vague. When possible, be clear about what\u2019s going on. Give the right amount of detail, but don\u2019t get too technical. Write in a way that anyone could easily understand. Ahem. That means <em>no<\/em> jargon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Imagine you see an ad about oh, say, Spotify Premium, and you click on the link to start a free trial. Then, you land on a page and see something like this:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6580\" style=\"width: 2810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/1OPL0sFzu3xpQtViI5Qt6ag.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6580\" class=\"wp-image-6580 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/1OPL0sFzu3xpQtViI5Qt6ag.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"2800\" height=\"1090\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Needs work<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">It\u2019s not clear <em>why <\/em>you\u2019re ineligible, especially since you just got an email saying, \u201cHey, get this thing.\u201d What\u2019s the deal?<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">In this case, it\u2019s important to tell the user what happened (they\u2019re ineligible) and why (they signed up for a free trial before).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6580\" style=\"width: 1410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/1MkJk6b2GSGuEG3Fzz_FOdA.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6580\" class=\"wp-image-6580 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/1MkJk6b2GSGuEG3Fzz_FOdA.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1400\" height=\"545\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Better!<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">And yes, this message did get longer \u2014 but sometimes we need to <em>add<\/em> information to make it useful.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">2. Suggest a next\u00a0step<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">After you say what happened, tell the user what they can do to resolve the issue: include a button, link, or other type of call to action. And write a clear headline that gets the point across quickly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Imagine you want to look for some new podcasts. You fire up the app, and see an error message that says:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6580\" style=\"width: 2810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/1YQRh9Ehy-FABQj7Dh16IKA.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6580\" class=\"wp-image-6580 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/1YQRh9Ehy-FABQj7Dh16IKA.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"2800\" height=\"1170\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Needs work<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">This tells you that something went wrong, but it doesn\u2019t suggest a next step. It\u2019s better to include a clear headline (App is out of date) and call to action (the download button).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6580\" style=\"width: 1410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/1GwIteJ5fM_-NFUeoPBo1Kg.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6580\" class=\"wp-image-6580 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/1GwIteJ5fM_-NFUeoPBo1Kg.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1400\" height=\"575\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Better!<\/p><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">3. Find the right\u00a0tone<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">As UX writers, we want to convey the right information at the right time. But it\u2019s not only about what we say, it\u2019s <em>how <\/em>we say it. When it comes to tone, we try to find the right balance, or as we say in Sweden, <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lagom\"><em>lagom<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Tone refers to the character, or the attitude of the language. Within the same brand voice, your writing can take on a different tone depending on the situation. It can be more serious, or neutral, or friendly\u2014it all depends on who you\u2019re writing for, and what you\u2019re writing about. You vary your tone constantly\u2014just think about the way you talk to your friends, your parents, or your boss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">OK. So how do you choose the right tone? You can start by asking yourself:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s list list--unordered marginBottom-l lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\n<li><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">How might the user feel in this situation? <\/strong>If it\u2019s a stressful or serious issue, then a silly tone would be inappropriate.<\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Would you actually say this?<\/strong> Reading the message out loud can help you pinpoint words or phrases that need to be revised.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/1NUBTDySL7fMq5hJqiY99cg.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6580\" src=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/1NUBTDySL7fMq5hJqiY99cg.png\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><span class=\"long-quote\">Bad request. Try again? \u2192 <em>This one\u2019s pretty clear and approachable. Nice.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><span class=\"long-quote\">Problemo! The password you provided doesn\u2019t match. Wanna try that again? \u2192 <em>Would you actually say this? It\u2019s a bit too silly.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">These three messages communicate the same thing, but the tone is different. When you\u2019re writing an error message, choose the tone that best fits the audience and context.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">A quick\u00a0recap<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">When it comes to a good or bad user experience, the difference is often in the details. Writing clear error messages can reduce frustration and help people continue using your app or service.
