I\u2019ve begun to notice a clear correlation between the number of questions a designer asks throughout the process and the quality of the final design output.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">It\u2019s much more than <em>creating, <\/em>it\u2019s about <em>understanding<\/em> your problem so well that the solution is obvious.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">In order to understand the challenge at hand, UX Designers must ask great questions at every stage of the process. I\u2019ve cataloged a robust list of questions (100 to be exact) that I\u2019ve found to be useful for projects spanning industries, devices, and personas. While by no means comprehensive, it should provide a framework for design thinking through different stages of a project.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Kickoff Meeting<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">In order to align the delivery team and stakeholders around the vision and project plan, the big questions need to be asked. Avoid jumping to solutions, instead focus on the underlying problems and insights that can give the team foundational knowledge to design from later.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s list list--unordered marginBottom-l lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\n<li>What is the problem or need we are aiming to solve?<\/li>\n<li>What does the product need to do?<\/li>\n<li>What is the business opportunity? (e.g. acquisition, activation, retention, revenue, referral, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>What are the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)?<\/li>\n<li>How else will we define success for this project?<\/li>\n<li>How does this product fit into the overall strategy?<\/li>\n<li>Who are the users or customers?<\/li>\n<li>Why is this important to them?<\/li>\n<li>Why do they care?<\/li>\n<li>What are the users trying to do?<\/li>\n<li>What are their pain points?<\/li>\n<li>How can we reach users through this design process?<\/li>\n<li>Are there any constraints (technological, business, etc.)?<\/li>\n<li>How are we better than our competitors?<\/li>\n<li>Are there any relevant products we can look at?<\/li>\n<li>Who are the primary decision-makers on this project?<\/li>\n<li>Does any relevant documentation exist (personas, user flows, etc.)?<\/li>\n<li>Do brand guidelines exist?<\/li>\n<li>Does a style guide exist?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Stakeholder Interviews<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Further understand the business and market by speaking with individuals who have a vested interest in the organization and the project. Many of these questions can be asked during kickoffs, but if asked individually they can yield better answers.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s list list--unordered marginBottom-l lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\n<li>What is your role in this project?<\/li>\n<li>What is the one thing we must get right to make this project worth undertaking?<\/li>\n<li>How will you, personally, define success for this project?<\/li>\n<li>What is the role of this project in achieving that success?<\/li>\n<li>What are the goals you need to achieve from this project?<\/li>\n<li>What have you tried that has\/hasn\u2019t worked?<\/li>\n<li>What went wrong in that case?<\/li>\n<li>Who are the biggest competitors and what worries you about them?<\/li>\n<li>How do you expect to differentiate this product?<\/li>\n<li>Where do you want the product to be in the next year, 5 years?<\/li>\n<li>What keeps you up at night with regards to your users?<\/li>\n<li>What assumptions do you think you are making about your users?<\/li>\n<li>What do you know for sure about your users?<\/li>\n<li>What are the most common problems your users face?<\/li>\n<li>What worries you about this project?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">User Research<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Avoid the risk and expense of creating something users don\u2019t want by first understanding their goals and pain points. Answers to these questions can give you the all-important \u201cwhy\u201d behind user behavior.
