Sprints allow the team to define the customer, plot out a user journey, and validate the concepts with real users on the final day of the Sprint.<\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\u201cWe bring everyone working on the project together.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong>A lot of times, this is success enough. Big companies have a large number of projects with team members across multiple locations (and also new members that never met before). This brings everyone to the same room for five days \u2014 and that helps with the project going forward.<\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\u201cJobs said Sprints are much better than focus groups.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong>On the last day of the Sprint, devoted to user testing, we show the built prototypes to users and get actual feedback. Much more rewarding and valuable than any kind of focus group.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><span class=\"long-quote\">\u201cIt\u2019s really hard to design products by focus groups. The workshop needs someone that will keep the group honest in terms of existing and future engineering capabilities. Participating, you\u2019ll actually help in steering the product the <em>right<\/em> way.<\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\u201cSprints will allow you to switch gears for a week.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nThis will come as a positive change. For one week, there will be less coding and code-reviewing, and more product definition and development. The following week, it\u2019s going to be much easier to jump into the routine.<\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\u201cThis is the counterpart to agile in development.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nYou already do (and know everything about) sprints. The Design Sprints is the product design equivalent to development sprints.<\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\u201cPreparation (think API spec) will go much smoother.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nWhen everyone sketches and presents solutions, you\u2019ll validate in real time what\u2019s feasible and come out of the workshop armed with next steps \u2014 preparing that API way before the actual development starts.<\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\u201cThere will be fewer changes when development actually starts.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nThere will be fewer change requests mid development. Solutions will be explored, bad ones flushed out, designed, prototyped and tested. Decisions are made on the spot, assumptions tested and going into the project that follows is much easier.<\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\u201cYou will understand why you\u2019re actually designing this.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nOften times, internal communication is not at its best. For instance, not everyone is included in every meeting, project briefs are missing relevant information and things get misplaced. If a project <em>lands<\/em> on your table, you\u2019re probably going to miss some context. If you\u2019re part of a Sprint, this will not be an issue.<\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\u201cYou will actually get a <em>seat<\/em> at the table.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong>A popular phrase in the Design community, about designers getting a seat at the table. When we\u2019re discussing the visual aspect of a product, it\u2019s mostly not going to happen. But when we\u2019re discussing the actual product, customers and most importantly \u2014 business goals \u2014 you\u2019ll have everyone\u2019s ear.<\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\u201cYou\u2019ll hear real users giving feedback.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nThe last day of the Sprint is the most rewarding and painful at the same time. You\u2019ll actually <em>watch<\/em> real people interacting with your one day <em>design.<\/em> Don\u2019t be emotionally connected, just listen. You\u2019ll start creating much better designs when you do.<\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\u201cSprints will force you to brush on your skills.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nLet\u2019s think about this: Building prototypes in one day? Every time for a different client, on a different platform? Using different tools?
