It was also extremely difficult to hire good UX designers, as there was nowhere to really learn what was required for the accelerating digital product world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">The UX Designer role itself was a tantalising combination of many older job titles, like information architect, interaction designer, and many others. Any conversation could be ended with a simple \u201cBecause: UX\u201d. We were on fire. At AJ&amp;Smart, we can no longer stand out as a digital agency focussing purely on creating great user experiences. In 2017, designers can start with robust design systems and patterns from companies like Google (see <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/material.io\/guidelines\/\">Material Design<\/a>) and without a huge amount of effort, have something people will be familiar with.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Damn you <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@MatiasDuarte\">Matias Duarte<\/a>, you ruined all our fun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">This is not to say that extremely skilled UX\/UI designers are no longer important, it\u2019s more to say that the juniors of today now have access to tools and patterns which bring them extremely close to the skillset of the seniors of the last decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">The problem with \u201cgood enough\u201d is that if you\u2019re looking for a long, fruitful career, then <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">good-enough is not enough.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">It\u2019s not enough to understand the user, you need to understand the\u00a0business<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">During the Golden Age of UX, designers were given a free pass on understanding the intricacies of the business behind the product they were working on. In the Golden Age it was enough just to deeply understand the needs of the \u201cuser\u201d. The user was all important and anything that got in the way of the user having the best experience imaginable was considered to be detrimental to the success of the product (from the designer\u2019s perspective).<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Here\u2019s the problem\u2026 now that great usability, beautiful UI and lovely, delightful animations are a given (for companies who want to play the game), it\u2019s easy for UX designers, once considered an integral part of the product strategy, to fall into pure production roles. Production roles, even those requiring high levels of skill, are always easier to replace and automate than strategic ones, so the UX designer of the future is going to have to transform and grow into something a little different if they want to continue to have a say in product decisions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">To make this transition from UX Designer to\u2026. \u201cProduct Designer\u201d, there are 3 things you\u2019ll need to understand: Product Strategy, Growth and Marketing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Luckily, i\u2019ve made a simple \u201cget started\u201d guide for each below!<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">1.
